Polygon Earth

Somewhere in the Vault there is a model of the surface as it was the day of the Flood. Low resolution, because that’s what they could afford to save: a globe made of a few thousand triangles, coastlines rounded off, every city a single point of light.

The Code Master goes down to look at it about once a year. He doesn’t touch it. Sister Noise has offered to fill in the detail from what leaks through the archive, and he has said no every time, because a higher-resolution memory is not a more accurate one.

Denver is on it. One light, a little west of the middle, where the mountains used to make the shape of the continent obvious. The whole of Bitlantis came out of that one point.

Kestrel put the globe on the heaviest garment in the store on purpose. It’s the thing you wear when the Shallows get cold, which is most of the time, and it’s the thing you wear when you want to remember there was a surface. Same thing, mostly.
