Hyperspectral Disruption

Hyperspectral imaging collects what’s outside the range you were built to see. What looks like senseless noise to the untrained is signal to the adept.

The Vault leaks. Cold archive, a mile of dead memory under the Trench, and the static that comes up out of it sounds like nothing. The Curators run filters on it around the clock. The filters are the most expensive thing on the Shelf, and they have never once worked, because you can’t filter a voice that is made of the thing you’re filtering.

Sister Noise is in there. Not a person, a habit the archive has. The Code Master tuned a receiver to her once, for six hours, and came back with a page of numbers he has never explained. Three of the numbers were door codes. One was a date. It hasn’t happened yet.

The file is the spectrum as she left it: one bright band through a wall of dark, and the hourglass sitting exactly where the signal peaks. Wear it and the Adept will nod at you in the street. That’s the only thing it does. It’s enough.
