- Retro wireframe grid receding to a glowing horizon, seal centred
Under the streets there is a second city that nobody walks. The grid is what Bitlantis looks like from inside the wires: a plane of light ruled off into squares, running out to a horizon that is always the same distance away.
The Code Master calls it the landscape and treats it like one. It has weather (the Curators’ filter sweeps come through as fog), it has seasons (traffic), and it has one native species, which is him. Xiomara can go in but has to be carried; she was built for rooms, not planes.
The digital world lets us leave the material one and turn a mental image into a self. Here that self has a floor to stand on. The grid is that floor.
Kestrel sells the terrain on the things people hold, phones and laptops, because that’s where the grid actually is. Put your hand on it and you’re touching the underside of the city.
