Yin Yang

Subject
Director Halden
District
The Shelf
Design
Yin yang built from ones and zeros, hourglass at the centre

Rising order triggers responding disorder. Halden knows this. It is the only thing he and the Code Master agree on, and neither of them will say it to the other.

The Director’s office is the cleanest room in Bitlantis. One desk, one chair, the dome overhead, no water anywhere. He keeps the yin yang on the wall behind him because a consultant told him it projected balance. He does not know that the ones and zeros it’s drawn with spell out a full copy of the Curators’ filter rules, or that the Code Master put them there, or that the file has been on the wall for two years.

Every time Halden tightens the Shelf, the Trench loosens exactly as much. Every sweep makes one more Adept. He calls this a compliance gap. The Code Master calls it the weather.

Kestrel got the design off a Curator who wanted to be paid in something that wasn’t order. It’s the only file in the store with the Director’s name on it, and the only one he has personally tried to have removed.
