The digital world lets us leave the material one behind and turn a mental image into a self. We become a ghost in the code.
The Code Master does not walk the grid as a man. When he goes in, the city sees a dragon: red plate, gold wire, a cyborg thing that moves through the wireframe landscape like it was born there, because it was. Red Dragon X is not a costume. It is what he looks like when there is no body in the way.
The Curators have a file on the dragon that is forty thousand pages long and does not contain a name. Halden has read all of it. Sister Noise says the file is the most accurate description of the Code Master anyone has written, and that this is why it’s useless.
Kestrel sells the image on the condition that nobody asks who it is. Nobody does. Everyone in the Shallows already knows the answer, and they like being the kind of people who don’t say it.
